Stephen J. Smith, CFA has spent over 12 years in energy portfolio management. Steve has extensive experience in renewables, hedging, bidding strategy and dispatch of renewable and fossil generation and load. Steve holds a BA in Economics and Finance from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and is a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder.
At Enel X, Steve serves as a Renewable Energy Procurement Manager assisting both government and corporate clients seeking to expand their renewable energy portfolios and meet decarbonization targets. Steve helps clients with renewable education, strategic goal setting, and market implementation strategies, creating a holistic approach to energy management and renewables.
Prior to joining Enel, Steve worked for Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC) a joint action agency created by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Steve had a duel roll as fixed income investment manager and bilateral power hedger. Steve then transitioned to commodity management as his sole focus, responsible for long term PPAs, short term bilateral hedging, RECs, BTM peak forecasting and remote dispatch of DERs including batteries, flywheel and generators for 20 separate Members. Steve also bid in the ISO-NE a 20 MW wind farm and a 500 MW combined cycle power plant procuring both gas and oil for its operation. In 2021, Steve created a road map to 2050, net zero carbon for each Member, aligning them with the state goals. Steve additionally worked on Wall Street for almost a decade supporting primarily interest rate and equity OTC derivatives traders.
